The U.S. is rolling out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to the White House next week, complete with a gleaming new helicopter pad and ceremonial troops in dress uniforms.

But beneath the pageantry lie deeper concerns about artificial intelligence, trade wars and the threat of conflict over Taiwan.

Trump has said he will discuss "almost everything" with Xi when they meet on September 24, yet experts predict the two leaders will likely just manage their rivalry rather than reach major breakthroughs.

The encounter mirrors Xi's hosting of Trump in Beijing five months ago, where warm personal rapport masked fundamental disagreements.

AI dominance has become the defining competition between Washington and Beijing, with both racing ahead and neither willing to slow down or cooperate on regulation.

The topic is expected to dominate discussions, though meaningful deals remain politically out of reach for now.

Iran will also loom large, particularly after reports that Chinese entities provided satellite imagery to Tehran for a strike on U.S. troops.

Trump has downplayed the controversy, suggesting such espionage is normal between rivals.

Trade remains another flashpoint, with room for negotiation on tariffs, farm purchases and export controls.

But Taiwan sits as the most sensitive issue the self-governing island that Beijing claims and Washington vows to protect.

Chinese invasion fears remain ever-present.

Trump appears more interested in the spectacle than substance.

He pushed hard for the new granite landing pad to be finished in time and has ordered a lavish state dinner.

He even expressed frustration that his under-construction $400 million ballroom won't be ready, though he claims it will eventually dwarf Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

One likely outcome is an announcement of future summits.

Trump and Xi are expected to meet again in November at an Asia-Pacific forum in China, with Moscow suggesting a three-way meeting with Putin.

Trump is also expected to invite Xi to a December G20 summit at his Miami resort.
