A 45,000-litre petrol tanker overturned at Isimi in Epe, Lagos State, on Thursday after crashing into a broken-down pickup truck, spilling its inflammable contents across the road.
The incident occurred around 10:19 a.m. when the tanker (registration number T-18212LA) attempted to swerve past a stationary Ford pickup van carrying animal feed.
During the maneuver, one of the tanker’s rear tires slipped into a pit, causing the heavy vehicle to flip over onto the van.
Confirming the event in a statement, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that no lives were lost and no injuries were sustained.
Emergency responders including LASEMA's Epe team, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, LNSC, FRSC, and the Nigeria Police Force quickly cordoned off the area and diverted traffic.
Firefighters sprayed chemical foam over the overturned tanker and the surrounding roadway to prevent any risk of explosion or fire.
Responders successfully transferred the remaining fuel into an empty tanker before towing both damaged vehicles to the Ketu Police Station.
The road has since been cleared and reopened to traffic.
Oke-Osanyintolu praised the rapid inter-agency response that averted a potential disaster while urging heavy-duty vehicle operators to ensure proper maintenance and drive cautiously on Lagos roads.
