Bandits killed at least 13 people in three villages in Zamfara State in retaliation after local vigilantes killed a bandit kingpin and his men.

The attacks hit Dandallah, Tudu Gabas and Unguwar Majidadi villages in Dansadau.

The bandits believed the three communities helped the vigilantes carry out the operation and targeted them in revenge.

According to residents, nine people died in Dandallah, two in Unguwar Sarkin and one or two in Tudu Gabas.

The violence forced 80 to 90 percent of villagers to flee to Dansadau town for safety.

A resident said tensions between bandits and vigilantes had been building for years.

The bandits banned farming in the area for the last two years and have enslaved residents.

Security forces rarely venture into the villages, leaving them largely unprotected.

The bandits accused village elders of empowering the vigilantes, claiming the operation to kill the kingpin could not have succeeded without community support.

Residents said the bandits have dominated the villages and used the routes there to terrorise people in nearby towns.
