The Federal Government has suspended the head of the NSCDC in Niger State after 33 suspected illegal miners died while in the agency's custody.

The Federal Government suspended the Niger State commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps following the death of 33 suspected illegal miners in the corps' custody.
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the investigation after the miners died on Thursday at the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis in Minna.
The deaths occurred after the NSCDC arrested suspected illegal miners during enforcement operations on September 15 and 16.
The suspended commandant, Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, must report to NSCDC headquarters in Abuja to face an inquiry panel.
Also directed to report are the state's heads of operations, mining, legal, intelligence and investigation.
A new commandant has been assigned to Niger State.
The minister said the incident was unfortunate and stressed that the government's priority is protecting lives and security.
He urged the public to remain calm while the investigation proceeds.
The NSCDC said it will determine whether any personnel acted contrary to law or professional standards.
Anyone found culpable will face disciplinary action or criminal charges.
The corps reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the dignity and fundamental rights of persons in its custody.
