A 400-level student at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University has been shot dead by a stray bullet during a military operation in Wawa community, Niger State.
Ismail Ishaq Magaji, a public administration student, was killed on Thursday, September 17, when gunfire broke out during a military response to a communal land dispute in Borgu Local Government Area.
Military personnel from a task force operating in New Bussa opened fire during the confrontation.
One of the bullets allegedly hit Magaji at his home.
Magaji had returned from university after ASUU declared an indefinite strike that disrupted academic activities at IBBU.
He was a final-year student expected to begin his final examinations around September 5.
His coursemate, Yahaya Gambo Lawal, described Magaji as a promising student who was gentle, calm and friendly.
Lawal said it was unfortunate that someone killed by stray fire was supposed to be protected by security personnel.
No official statement has been issued by the Nigerian Army, Niger State Government, IBBU management or the police as of press time.
The exact circumstances of his death have not been independently verified.
