Police officers in Kogi State have arrested Elijah Olorunsuwa, a lecturer at the University of Ilorin, over cybercrime allegations linked to comments he made on a community WhatsApp group about a road project.
Olorunsuwa was picked up at his Ilorin residence without an arrest warrant and driven to Kogi State following a petition by Jerry Omodara, the security adviser to the Kogi State government.
The dispute started after the lecturer claimed on a local WhatsApp platform that a road reconstruction project in their hometown was funded by the World Bank rather than the state government.
Omodara described the claims as false, malicious, and aimed at discrediting the government.
He stated that the lecturer was arrested after refusing to publish an official retraction, while Olorunsuwa maintained that he had already deleted the messages following intervention from community elders.
