An ordinary day of playing by the river turned into a devastating nightmare when an 11-year-old girl suffered a sudden injury that left everyone nearby in shock.

An 11-year-old girl from Cornwall died in the most tragic accident on a muddy riverbank.
Lilly Angel Rodgers, who loved surfing and climbing, was playing with two other kids at Wacker Quay near Plymouth on August 16, 2025.
The kids were sliding down the mud bank near the River Lynher when something hidden beneath the mud pierced Lilly's chest.
She gasped, fell, and didn't get up.
The adults watching them who were setting up a barbecue nearby heard the other children screaming and called emergency services.
Lilly was airlifted off the mud flats.
It took 40 minutes to get her to dry land.
She was rushed to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth but died.
A doctor found the wound was 7 centimetres deep.
A sharp branch or root buried under the mud had severed her artery.
He said if it had been half an inch to the right, she would have just gotten a bruise.
Half an inch to the left, she might have lived.
This hit exactly where it couldn't be survived.
The coroner said there was nothing suspicious.
The kids had played there many times. Adults were watching.
Nothing like it had happened at that spot in 40 years.
He called it the most unlucky accident.
Her parents, Nick and Vanya, received support from the community after losing their beautiful daughter.
