A doctor who testified against Lucy Letby now says he's uncertain of her guilt.
Dr John Gibbs, one of three consultants whose evidence helped convict her, is calling for a fresh trial.
Letby, 36, is serving 15 whole-life sentences after being convicted in 2023 and 2024 of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder eight others at the Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal unit in 2015 and 2016.
Her appeals have been rejected twice.
Dr Gibbs told The Sun: "If Lucy Letby is behind bars for crimes she didn't commit, that's appalling."
He added he has serious concerns that no crime may have been committed at all.
When asked if he remains certain she killed the babies, he said no.
An 822-page inquiry by Lady Justice Thirlwall published last week found a complete failure to protect babies on the unit.
The hospital had dysfunctional management and never properly invoked safeguarding procedures.
Thirlwall said once there was suspicion Letby was causing harm, she should have been removed from the ward immediately as a neutral act while investigations happened.
Health Secretary Yvette Cooper said the report must be a turning point for the NHS and that baby safeguarding must never be treated as a side issue again.
Prison sources say Letby has become increasingly reclusive at HMP Bronzefield since the death of consultant Mark Deakin, who worked with her at the hospital.
The pair exchanged over 1,300 social media messages in 2016.
Letby is now spending most of her time alone in her cell, watching TV and comfort-eating chocolate.
