Kaduna's free CNG bus programme has been helping residents cope with rising transport costs since it began in 2025.

Kaduna State's free CNG bus service has been running for 15 months and is cushioning the impact of high transport costs on residents.
The commissioner for information said Kaduna is the only state in Nigeria offering completely free CNG-powered buses.
Other states offer subsidies, some 50 percent.
Even the FCT doesn't offer free services.
The programme started July 7, 2025.
It runs 100 CNG buses on eight routes with about 200 bus stops.
In the first year, the buses carried 3.2 million passengers and saved them more than ₦3.5 billion in transport costs.
The free service has freed up money for families.
Civil servants are saving between 40 and 50 percent of salaries previously spent on transport.
That money now goes to food, children's education and family upkeep.
More students stay in school because transport is no longer a barrier. Women access healthcare more easily.
The commissioner even said the scheme has helped marriages by giving families more money to spend on each other instead of transport.
The CNG buses also reduce carbon emissions in the state, helping the environment.
President Tinubu cited Kaduna as an example when he pushed for a nationwide affordable CNG transport programme in August.
He inaugurated the 100 buses in Kaduna on June 19, 2025.
The Kaduna government has directed that the free service continue indefinitely with no stopping date.
