Kwankwaso Says Obi Government Will Make Petrol Cheaper

A politician named Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is running to be vice president with the Nigeria Democratic Congress party under presidential candidate Peter Obi, says the party would bring back fuel subsidy if they win the election.

However, they would do it differently than how it was done before.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, spoke to a news organization and explained how the NDC under Peter Obi would make petrol cheaper for Nigerians.

He said instead of the government just paying money to make petrol cheap, they would build refineries inside Nigeria to make their own petrol.

This way, Nigeria would not have to buy as much petrol from other countries.

He explained that if private business people can build refineries to make petrol, then the government should also be able to build refineries.

He said the goal would be to make sure Nigerians can go to fuel stations and buy petrol at a price that is fair and reasonable.

Kwankwaso said the NDC would do whatever is needed to bring the price of petrol down for people.

He did not call it bringing back subsidy in the old way, but he said they would find their own way to make petrol affordable.

He also criticized President Tinubu for removing the fuel subsidy immediately when he took office in 2023.

Kwankwaso said that while other presidential candidates in the 2023 election also supported removing the subsidy, Tinubu did it right away on his first day without preparing people for the problems that would come from it.

Kwankwaso said Tinubu should have taken time to plan how to handle the consequences before removing the subsidy so suddenly.
