Nigeria's police chief, Olatunji Disu, has warned police officers not to support any political party during the 2027 elections.

The top police officer in Nigeria said police officers must not help any political party during the 2027 elections.
He warned that any officer who takes sides or helps politicians will be punished.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, said the police must stay neutral and fair.
He said the police job is to protect people and enforce the law, not to decide who wins elections.
Disu said any officer who takes sides, stops voters from voting, works with politicians, or misuses their power will be investigated and punished.
He said the police will be tough against violence during the elections but will always follow the law.
The police chief said officers who are sent to work during elections must understand the rules about when they can use force.
He said force should only be used when nothing else works and must be fair and not too much.
Disu said the police will use their intelligence system to find places where trouble might happen and criminal groups that might cause problems before the elections start.
He said the police commissioners must know their communities well so they can report problems quickly to the leaders.
The police will train officers in how to handle large crowds, protect election workers and materials, stop conflicts from happening and respond quickly to problems.
The police will also work together with the election commission and other security agencies to make sure everyone is ready for the elections.
Disu said false information moves faster than police can respond.
He said fake election results, fake police statements and videos made to anger people can cause violence.
He said the police will watch for fake information and correct it quickly with the truth.
The police chief asked the heads of police in each state to share their phone numbers so the public can reach them during the elections.
He said if people cannot reach the police leader, the leader cannot understand what people are worried about.
He told all police officers to be ready, be present, be easy to reach and answer for what they do.
The presidential and national assembly elections will happen on January 16, 2027.
The governor and state assembly elections will happen on February 6, 2027.
