People living with disabilities in Ogun State are asking the government to stop leaving the state disability law on paper.

Disability groups in Ogun State have asked the government to fully put the state's Disability Law into use nearly nine years after it was signed.
The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities and the Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria made the call during a press briefing in Abeokuta on Wednesday, asking Governor Dapo Abiodun to take action before his term ends in eight months.
The Disability Law was signed by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun on December 27, 2017, but has not been fully set up.
Persons with disabilities are still waiting for the law to create working institutions, enforceable protections and accessible public systems.
The groups said a law made to protect the rights of persons with disabilities must not stay on paper but must become action.
They said since 2025 they have met with the government and other players through meetings, talks, letters and visits without success.
Their campaign is not to fight the government but to ensure promises become real work.
The groups said talks about changing the law should not be used to delay putting it into use.
They want the government to start using the existing law while pursuing any needed changes through the proper lawmaking process.
This way both sides can work on putting it into place and improving it at the same time.
Not putting the law into use has real effects on persons with disabilities in school, healthcare, transport, jobs, money-making and political life.
The groups called for accessible public services and ways to protect rights and watch government action.
The World Health Organisation says about 16 per cent of people worldwide have serious disability.
A 2025 estimate puts 1,032,221 persons with disabilities in Ogun State.
The disability groups said they see government as a key partner and are not against it.
They said they have written letters, gone to meetings, paid visits, worked with legal experts and government officials, done public awareness work and kept talking.
They said the next step should be action and asked the governor to make sure the law is fully put into use before his time in office ends.
