TG Omori Opens Up About the Huge Cost of Kidney Treatment

Nigerian music video director TG Omori has spoken about the heavy cost of treating kidney failure, saying even a monthly salary of N1 million may not be enough to pay for dialysis treatment.

Speaking on a podcast, Omori talked about his experience with kidney failure and the struggles he faced while waiting for a transplant.

Omori said a dialysis session costs between N50,000 and N70,000 at some hospitals, but he paid between N150,000 and N200,000 at a private facility.

Patients may need up to three dialysis sessions a week, bringing the weekly bill to between N500,000 and N600,000.

He spent a lot on surgery and dialysis, saying someone earning minimum wage could not manage even one session.

He estimated that a patient on dialysis for about a year waiting for a transplant could spend as much as N31 million, not counting the cost of extra tests, drugs and possible problems.

Omori also told how his brother's kidney did not match his body.

It took nine months to find a donor but when his brother gave him a kidney, the doctors said his body was not accepting it and it did not match.

The doctors tried again but it did not work.

He was upset and they said they would have to take him back to try to make his body accept it.

His brother still has to live with only one kidney.

Looking back on what the treatment cost, Omori said even earning N1 million a month would not be enough to cover it.

The experience changed how he thinks about the role of money and help during serious sickness. He said although money cannot buy happiness, money can still buy some time.

Omori revealed in 2024 that he had a kidney transplant after his only brother gave him one of his kidneys.
