A major road project is reshaping a busy part of Umuahia after shops and roadside structures were cleared from the construction route.

Abia State has torn down shops and makeshift structures along the Nigerian Railways Quarters in Umuahia to clear the path for a new road construction project.
The demolition has been completed by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority.
The new road stretches from First Bank junction along Market Road through the Railways Quarters and terminates at Akanu Ibiam Road.
It's part of a design plan and agreement between the Abia State Government and the Nigeria Railway Corporation intended to ease traffic congestion in the state capital and restore its visual appeal.
Electronics dealers, dry cleaners near the Government House and various shops and shanties occupied the demolished structures.
An online news platform visited the area Thursday and confirmed the bulldozers had finished their work.
The UCDA defended the demolition, saying occupants received sufficient notice to vacate.
However, some of the displaced business owners confirmed they were given notice but couldn't secure alternative premises before the deadline expired.
They lamented the difficulty of finding new shops and homes within the timeframe.
