Scrap dealers across Nigeria say they will stop selling to steel companies from October 1 because they are unhappy with falling prices and extra charges.

Scrap metal dealers across Nigeria have announced plans to stop supplying iron and steel companies from October 1 until October 15 over what they say are unfair industry practices.
The National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria said the action could extend indefinitely if their grievances remain unresolved.
Dealers complain that steel companies repeatedly slash scrap metal prices without warning, leaving them with heavy losses on materials already bought and transported.
A single truckload can mean losses between three and six million naira when prices suddenly drop.
Companies also deduct between one and five per cent from payment amounts under what they call charges for excess dust, adding further financial strain to dealers' operations.
The association raised concerns about growing involvement of foreign operators in the sector, saying they are opening collection centres and dumpsites across the country.
This makes it harder for local dealers to compete and operate fairly.
There is also worry that some steel companies buy scrap from unregistered dealers and unauthorised agents, risking the circulation of stolen materials into the steel industry.
The association wants stronger oversight to ensure scrap entering the system comes through legitimate channels.
Association leadership has urged members to conduct the strike peacefully without confrontation or property damage.
They said they want to resolve the dispute through dialogue with steel companies and have called on government agencies and industry stakeholders to help broker a fair settlement.
