A new training programme in Cross River is giving thousands of young people a chance to gain skills for the oil and gas industry.

Cross River State Government has launched an oil and gas skills programme aimed at training 2,000 young people across the state.
The initiative, launched Thursday under the theme "Skill Up in the Season of Sweetness," offers accredited certificate and diploma courses designed to prepare participants for careers in the energy sector.
Governor Bassey Otu, represented at the event by the state assembly speaker, described the programme as part of his administration's focus on developing people and creating opportunities for youth.
The oil and gas industry offers openings in multiple areas including engineering, logistics, safety, environmental management, procurement, maintenance, data services and exploration.
The governor said government's role is to equip young people with the technical knowledge and professional credentials needed to compete for jobs in the global energy market.
Training 2,000 youths through accredited programmes, he added, represents investment not just in individuals but in their families, communities and the state's productive capacity.
He urged beneficiaries to approach the training seriously and continue building their skills, noting that the certificates would help with career advancement, starting businesses and participating in the wider economy.
The state intends to keep rolling out programmes that expand access to skills, business opportunities and employment.
Otu said he is creating an environment where talent is recognised, skills are valued and young people have the tools to become entrepreneurs, professionals and drivers of development.
He encouraged participants to apply what they learn in their careers and represent Cross River State with distinction in their professional activities.
