The National Youth Service Corps is mourning its former Director-General, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa, who died on Monday, September 28, 2026.

The management of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has reacted to the passing of its former Director-General, Colonel Peter Kolawole Obasa, who died on Monday September 28 2026.
The current Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made a condolence visit to the late Obasa home in Ilorin, Kwara State.
He described him as a pioneering administrator and one of the main builders of the NYSC.
He said Obasa set up a strong administrative system that has kept the Scheme running for decades.
Nafiu pointed out that Obasa served as the third head of the NYSC from 1979 to 1984 and recorded major achievements during those years.
He thanked the late colonel for his great contributions to the growth of the Scheme and prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
According to him, the death is a deep loss not only to the family but also to the NYSC, whose staff will always honour his work and legacy.
He also singled out Obasa for the guidance and support he gave during his lifetime.
Nafiu promised that the NYSC will keep building on the solid base laid by its founding fathers and work to make the Scheme stronger.
He also passed on the warm condolences of the whole NYSC community to the Obasa family.
Speaking for the family, Victor Obasa thanked Nafiu for the visit and said his father death came as a surprise.
He thanked God for the life of the late colonel and for the proud legacy he left behind.
He said the family is deeply touched and grateful to the NYSC for the respect shown to their father and for still remembering him.
