A fire broke out on Monday at the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Western Marine Command office in Apapa, Lagos, destroying property worth millions of naira.
The blaze began around 10:23 a.m. due to an electrical surge in the conference room before spreading through other parts of the building.
Customs officers tried to contain the flames until firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at 10:45 a.m. to help put out the fire.
The incident happened just as the newly deployed Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Timothy Jonah, was resuming duty.
Describing the event as unfortunate, Jonah commended the quick response of the officers and firefighters, announced plans to set up an investigative committee, and promised to strengthen safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
