Six firearms have been recovered from New York City public schools since the school year began in September, according to the union representing school safety officers.
The figure followed the discovery of two handguns at two different schools on Tuesday, within hours of each other.
The first was found at Eximius College Prep Academy at about 11:15am.
A school safety officer was told that a 15 year old student had an outstanding arrest warrant.
The teenager was found with a 9mm handgun and a magazine holding more than 20 rounds of ammunition. Police took him into custody.
Later the same day, at about 2:07pm, officers went to Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology after a 17 year old student was found with a handgun.
He was also taken into custody.
Police have not released the names of the students because they are minors.
The incidents have raised questions about security at the schools, since neither Eximius College Prep Academy nor Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology has metal detectors.
The Department of Education had not replied to News 12's request for comment on the firearms and the security measures at the schools.
