Suspected hoodlums have killed Igbu Terhemen, the chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Fiidi Council Ward, Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.
Sources say he left home on Tuesday evening to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area and never returned.
Family and friends went looking for him and found him around 2am on Wednesday in a bush near his home close to the NNPC Depot on the Makurdi-Otukpo Road.
He was unconscious and died before he could get medical help.
A friend who asked not to be named said the attackers did not take his phone, which was found on him at the morgue.
He also said there was a needle-like mark on his body, which suggests he may have been injected with something before being dumped in the bush.
The party's state chapter, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary Agile Bem, condemned the killing.
It said he was allegedly tied with ropes, injected with substances suspected to be poisonous and left near his home.
It added that he was found almost unconscious and could not speak before he died.
The party described him as a committed member who helped grow the party in the state.
State chairman Ohini Ojegbe called the killing a broad-daylight evil and urged security agencies to investigate quickly, arrest those behind it and bring them to justice.
The state police spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, said the command had not yet received a report on the incident.
