WAEC Names Dr Amos Dangut as New Registrar and CEO

The West African Examinations Council has appointed Dr Amos Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.

The West African Examinations Council has appointed Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, a Nigerian, as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer. He served as Head of the Nigeria National Office from October 2023 until September 2026.

Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Demianus G. Ojijeogu, announced this in a statement on Thursday.

Dangut will serve a five-year tenure from October 2026 to September 2031.

He takes over from Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

Council, the international governing board of WAEC, ratified his appointment at its 74th Annual Meeting in Accra in March 2026. He took office on October 1, 2026 as the 14th Registrar.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science and a PhD in Animal Science, and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

He started his career in education in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he worked as a WAEC examiner before joining the Council in 1998.

Over the years he has served as Assistant Registrar in the Test Development Division, Head of Examinations Security, Deputy Branch Controller in Uyo and Bauchi, Branch Controller in Yola, Controller of the Post-Examinations Department, Zonal Coordinator in Ikeja and Deputy Registrar, Head of National Office.

With over two decades of experience, he is known for using technology to improve test development, administration and post-test work.

As Head of National Office, he led the rollout of Computer-Based WASSCE, the serialization of question papers and a Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also oversaw the Digital Certificate Portal, the WAEC E-Study Platform, a Digital Records Archive and systems for exam logistics and monitoring of examiners.

He earned a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters from 2000 to 2006, and an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his NYSC year.

Dangut has served on the boards of NERDC, JUPEB, JAMB and Grange Educational Foundation, and represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

He has published in international and national journals and presented papers at several conferences.

He is the Regional Representative of the West African Sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

He is also a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management.
