The Anambra State Fire Service has confirmed that an eight-year-old girl died and several other people were injured in a road accident near the Anabel Event Centre in Awka, along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway.

In a statement on Tuesday, the service's Media and Publicity Unit, headed by Chukwudi Chiketa, said the accident happened on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

A commercial bus travelling from Nnewi to Enugu with 14 passengers on board crashed and overturned.

The fire service got the emergency call at about 3:30pm.

Its personnel rushed to the scene, checked the situation, secured the area and helped to rescue and evacuate the victims.

The bus, popularly called tracas, was damaged in the crash, but there was no fire.

The injured passengers were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Sadly, the eight-year-old girl did not survive.

Fire service personnel also took safety steps to prevent any further disaster and stayed at the scene until it was safe.

They left at about 5:45pm the same day.

The service urged motorists and other road users to be very careful, avoid speeding and stay alert while driving, especially when carrying passengers.
