The African Democratic Congress has called for the National Youth Service Corps scheme to be suspended for one year so the Federal Government can reorganise it and put stronger measures in place to protect corps members.
The party's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the call in an interview.
He said NYSC is still important for national unity but should be reviewed because of the worsening security situation across the country.
Abdullahi said the safety of young Nigerians must come first, especially after incidents in which prospective corps members were abducted.
He asked how so many corps members could be kidnapped when there were signs that the area was open to attacks.
He also criticised how the Federal Government is handling insecurity, saying security personnel are not properly equipped to deal with the problem.
He accused President Bola Tinubu of paying more attention to the 2027 election than to Nigerians held captive by kidnappers.
Abdullahi also faulted the President's Independence Day speech, saying it gave too little attention to the country's security challenges and the plight of people in captivity.
