The U.S. Embassy in Russia has told American citizens not to travel to Russia and urged those already in the country to leave, citing security concerns and reports of a possible pneumonic plague outbreak in the Irkutsk region.
In a health alert issued on October 6, the embassy said it is watching reports of the possible spread of the disease and of quarantine measures put in place after a death in the region.
Americans who recently visited the area where the suspected outbreak was reported were told to monitor their health for 14 days.
The embassy also warned of security risks and the chance of unlawful detention.
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump said he was ready to help Russia deal with the reported spread of plague in Shelekhov District of the Irkutsk region.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed the offer and said it is always good when help is offered between countries.
However, the Deputy Head of Shelekhov District, Elena Sofina, said the region would handle it on its own.
After the U.S. statements, Russia's consumer protection and health watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, said the measles situation in the United States had grown worse.
