The Akwa Ibom State Government has promised to fix the poor state of facilities at the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, orientation camp.

Governor Umo Eno made the promise while declaring open the 2026 Batch C Stream 1 orientation camp.

A total of 1,978 corps members took the oath of allegiance at the ceremony, held at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai Local Government Area.

The governor was represented by Emmanuel Akpabio, a director in the Ministry of Youth Development.

He congratulated the corps members on finishing their studies and being posted to the state.

He said he knows the current condition of the camp and that work will start soon to improve it, so that training and accommodation will be better.

Eno said the corps members are a reminder of why the NYSC scheme still matters for national unity and development.

He called them co-builders of the nation and urged them to look beyond ethnic, religious and language differences in their service.

On welfare and security, he said the state is firmly committed to the safety and comfort of corps members throughout their service year.

He promised that their lives and property, as well as those of all residents, will be protected from harassment or intimidation by people with bad intentions.

The NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mrs Akuagbaogu Rosemary, described the state of the camp as a serious concern.

She said the rainy season has made things worse, especially in housing the large number of corps members posted to the state.

She asked the governor to step in quickly to improve accommodation and ensure the welfare, comfort and safety of the corps members, while also acknowledging the approval for a new orientation camp.
