FAAN plans to shut the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for about 25 days so it can be repaired and resurfaced.
The closure is set to begin on October 20 2026, but the date is not final yet.
The news came in a statement from Henry Agbebire, the director of public affairs and consumer protection at FAAN.
The runway has started to break down.
There are potholes and deep cracks, and recent heavy rain has made things worse.
The work will fix the cracks, patch the damaged areas and lay a fresh surface so the runway is safe before the Christmas rush.
The repairs will also extend the runway.
That will let the airport handle larger wide-body planes as more people travel to the region.
FAAN says this should make trips more comfortable for passengers.
Travellers planning to fly through Owerri during this period should check with their airlines for schedule changes and other options.
FAAN says it will share the final closure and reopening dates once they are confirmed.
