Nigeria has recorded 1,115 confirmed Lassa fever cases and 263 deaths across 24 states.

The death rate has gone up to 23.6 percent.

That is higher than the 18.5 percent seen at the same time last year.

The good news is that fewer people are getting infected.

Only 11 cases were confirmed in the week of September 14 to 20, down from 17 the week before.

New cases came from Ondo, Edo and Taraba states.

Five states account for most of the infections.

They are Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo, and together they make up 87 percent of all confirmed cases.

People aged 21 to 30 are the most affected group.

No new health workers were infected that week.

The virus spreads mostly when people come into contact with food or household items touched by infected rats.

It can also pass from person to person, especially in hospitals where infection control is weak.

The NCDC is asking health workers and the public to take precautions and report any suspected cases quickly.
