The Rivers State Ministry of Health has sealed eight health facilities and arrested four people for quackery, impersonation and running unregistered clinics.

This follows a week after it closed 21 facilities across four local government areas.

The biggest case was at 27 Victoria Street, where two suspected quacks were caught trying to carry out a thyroid operation on a patient.

Mr Ataisi Jephtha, who posed as a surgeon, and Mrs Mgboawaji Edwin were arrested, and the clinic was sealed.

Five hospitals and two laboratories were also shut for failing to meet minimum standards or for not being registered.

Ministry spokesperson Edna Alete made the announcement.

Permanent Secretary Dr Vincent Wachukwu warned that licensed doctors who work in unregistered or substandard facilities will also be penalised under Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria guidelines.
