The Nigerian Red Cross Society wants residents of Makoko, Lagos, to get their homes ready for flooding and other disasters.

It says early preparation can save lives and property.

About 120 volunteers from the society's Lagos State Branch walked through the waterfront community on Tuesday.

They handed out educational materials on flood risks and how to prepare.

The walk marked the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, which is observed every October 13.

The campaign's theme was "Resilience Starts at Home."

It focused on what families and communities can do to reduce risk before disaster strikes, especially in flood-prone areas.

The walk was led by branch Vice Chairman Segun Akande, along with branch Secretary Olakunle Lasisi and Disaster Management Officer Ige Oladimeji.
