Authorities in India have ordered actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, to leave the country by October 28.
The order follows his part in a protest in Mumbai calling for electoral reforms and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Khan is an American citizen with an Overseas Citizen of India card.
Police said the Foreigners' Regional Registration Office served him a notice for breaking the rules by protesting.
Police also said he took part in the agitation at August Kranti Maidan despite not being an Indian citizen.
His lawyer says no law or rule bars OCI cardholders from protesting, and he plans to challenge the order in the Bombay High Court.
The complaint was lodged by Kirit Somaiya of the BJP, who accused Khan of being involved in a plot to spread anarchy.
Khan said he came as a citizen, not as a member of any group, to question why freedom of movement and people's voices were being restricted.
He was briefly detained with other protesters.
The protest was called by the Cockroach Janta Party, a Gen Z led movement that has been demonstrating for days over alleged vote fraud.
India's election commission denies the claims.
Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have also joined marches.
On Wednesday, two top leaders of the movement were jailed for five days after being arrested for allegedly trespassing at a protest site in Delhi.
The group has called another protest in the capital on Friday evening.
