The House of Representatives wants the federal government to step in and save Odi Kingdom in Bayelsa State.

It is one of the oldest Ijaw communities in the state, and the sea keeps eating into it.

The erosion has got worse since an earth tremor hit the area in 2025.

Homes, farmland, public buildings and other important things are being lost.

Some people fear the community could disappear if nothing is done fast.

Oboku Oforji brought the matter to the House on Tuesday as a motion of urgent public importance, and lawmakers voted in support.

The House wants the federal government to provide money for the work.

It also wants agencies like the Environment Ministry, the Works Ministry, the Water Resources Ministry and the NDDC to check the damage and start protecting the shoreline and rebuilding the land.

Lawmakers have asked their committees to visit the community and report back within four weeks.

Odi also suffered in 1999, when a military invasion destroyed much of the town.

Residents rebuilt their homes then. Now the erosion is another big test for them.
