Fake food and drinks are now a serious risk to people's health, and the House of Representatives wants the government to act fast.
On Tuesday, lawmakers passed a motion that asks the federal government to step up the fight against fake, dirty and substandard food and drinks.
The motion was brought by Abubakar Yalleman, the APC member for Madori/Kaugama in Jigawa State.
He pointed to two recent cases.
In April, NAFDAC shut down a fake alcohol gang at Zamfara Plaza on Lagos Island.
In September, the NSCDC raided an unregistered fruit juice factory in Badagry, Lagos.
Yalleman said some makers copy famous brands, change expiry dates, use dirty ingredients and refill old bottles.
He warned that this can cause poisoning and damage to the kidneys, liver, lungs and heart, and in some cases even cancer.
Children and older people are most at risk.
The House wants NAFDAC, SON, FCCPC, the police, customs and state governments to work together.
They are asked to carry out more inspections, lab tests and arrests, and to take offenders to court.
Lawmakers also asked their committees on health, industry, customs, standards and consumer protection to report back within four weeks with plans for new laws and tougher action.
