The Nigeria Democratic Congress says it will hold fresh congresses to replace any candidates who leave the party.
This comes after Ibrahim Kashim, its Bauchi State governorship candidate, resigned.
Kashim is a former Secretary to the Bauchi State Government.
He announced his exit just hours before the party reacted.
Many people now think he may join the APC.
In a statement on Tuesday, NDC spokesman Osa Director said the party will replace defectors through fresh congresses, as allowed under the Electoral Act 2026.
He said people who leave the party never shared its values.
He also said other NDC candidates in Bauchi may follow Kashim out.
Kashim said he left after careful thought.
He said he will keep pushing for reform and development in Bauchi and that his movement is still active.
The NDC said the APC is trying to weaken the opposition with offers of money.
It called this the last kick of a dying horse and said it is still fully committed to winning the 2027 election.
