Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals, Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar.

A court in Mecca found them guilty of an immoral act inside a mosque and sentenced them to death.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said security forces arrested the pair after the incident.

The court said the offence was serious because it broke the holy status of the mosque.

The sentence was upheld, and the executions were carried out in the Mecca region on Wednesday, October 14.

The ministry has not said exactly what the act was.

Some posts on social media claim the couple were newlyweds on their honeymoon and that the man kissed the woman on the forehead.

Those details have not been confirmed by officials.

Bangladesh says it was not told about the executions before they happened.

Its consulate in Jeddah has sent a diplomatic note asking Saudi authorities to confirm the case.

Dhaka will wait for a reply before sharing more details or arranging to bring the bodies home.
