The Federal Executive Council has approved four new companies to manage the shipping channels that lead into Nigeria's seaports.
The aim is to make it safer and easier for ships to move in and out, and to improve port operations.
Capt. Ebubeogu Ihenacho, a former general manager at the Nigerian Ports Authority, shared the details at the annual general meeting of the Nigerian Association of Master Mariners.
He said the ownership of the Lagos Channel Management Company and the Bonny Channel Management Company will change.
A new company will run the Lagos port channel under a new name.
The Calabar Channel will have its own management company.
For the Warri channel, the government approved China Harbour Engineering Company and two other firms to form a group.
That group will set up a special company with the Nigerian Ports Authority to run the Escravos channel.
Sources close to the ports authority say a Belgian company is expected to take over channel work at the Lagos ports.
Reports could not confirm who the new owners are.
The ports authority had earlier chosen not to renew the contracts of the Lagos and Bonny channel companies.
It gave them six month extensions instead.
