John Anderson, one of the most traditional voices in U.S. country music, has died at 71.
His family said he died peacefully in his sleep, a few weeks before his 72nd birthday.
Anderson had five number one country hits.
Songs like Swingin, Wild and Blue and Straight Tequila Night made him a well known name.
Before he made it, he drove trucks and did odd jobs in Nashville during the day and played live shows at night.
He even once worked as a roofer on the Grand Ole Opry.
He released his first single in 1975 and broke through two years later.
Over his career he recorded 22 studio albums.
His 1992 album Seminole Wind brought him back to the top after a hard few years with his old record label.
In 2024 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
In 2017 an illness left him almost completely deaf.
He prayed hard, and his hearing slowly came back.
He kept performing after that.
His family called him the heart of their home, a man who made them laugh and loved them deeply.
Fellow singer Blake Shelton said he was shocked by the news and described Anderson as his hero and friend.
