More than 100 pupils in Ijebu Ode, Ago Iwoye and Ijebu Igbo were taken to hospital after breathing in a strange gas on Wednesday.
The state government has now closed some of the affected schools.
The gas hit around 10 in the morning.
Pupils and teachers struggled to breathe, and some fainted.
Parents rushed to collect their children.
Some schools in Ago Iwoye closed by 11 am because the smell became unbearable.
The worst hit schools are Ijebu Igbo Girls Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu Ode and Itamerin Comprehensive High School in Ago Iwoye.
This is the fourth time it has happened in the area since April.
About 40 pupils were affected in April, more than 120 were hospitalised in May, and 69 more went to hospital on June 1.
Earlier, gas testers at the schools found methane.
Officials think underground fault lines could be behind it.
The state is working with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Health and geology experts from Olabisi Onabanjo University to find the exact cause.
Kehinde Bello, a senior aide to Governor Dapo Abiodun, visited the affected areas.
He said the government believes the gas is a natural problem linked to the ground, not a pipeline leak or sabotage.
He told residents to stay calm and to cover their nose and mouth with a wet handkerchief if they smell it.
Medical staff are treating the pupils.
Residents are still waiting for a lasting solution.
