Iran's Revolutionary Guards have warned that they could strike American bases across the Middle East if the US military keeps escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

The warning came in a statement posted online on Thursday, which the Guards called a serious warning.

Iran says it controls the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping route that carried about a fifth of the world's oil before the war started in February.

Iran often attacks ships that try to pass without its permission.

As the US sends more escorts into the area, the attacks have increased.

Iranian forces said four ships were hit overnight while trying to cross the wider Gulf.

Washington is also keeping a naval blockade on Iranian ports to squeeze the country's economy.

Talks to end the conflict are stuck, and there is no sign yet of a breakthrough.
