A child has died from measles in Lewis County, in the north of New York State.

It is the state's first measles death in 30 years, officials said on Monday.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she was heartbroken and could not imagine what the family is going through.

She also linked the death to Trump administration health policies, saying Washington is weakening decades of progress against preventable diseases.

Hochul had declared a disaster emergency in October because of measles outbreaks in the state and nearby areas.

The United States is facing its worst measles outbreak in 35 years.

As of October 29, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had recorded 4,834 cases across 47 states.

Measles was declared eradicated in the US in 2000, but it has returned as vaccine doubts and distrust of health authorities have grown.

The disease can cause fever, painful rashes and breathing problems.

In severe cases it can lead to pneumonia or brain swelling, which can be fatal.
