A 22-year-old man, Atofeyinti Gafar, has been sentenced to two years in prison by an Abeokuta Magistrates' Court sitting in Isabo for stealing from a church and a mosque.
Gafar, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to four charges, including conspiracy, burglary and stealing.
Prosecutor Inspector Opeyemi Lawal told the court that the thefts happened in May and again on October 18, around 6 a.m., in the Itoko area of Abeokuta.
On the first date, Gafar allegedly broke into C & S Orisun Ibukun Goshen Church and took an amplifier engine, a foam mattress, two speakers, a stove with cooking utensils, two bells and some wire.
Those items were valued at about ₦1.1 million.
On October 18, he allegedly broke into the premises of Allahu Rahamon Islamic Society and took an amplifier engine and four speakers worth about ₦700,000.
Lawal said the stolen goods came to ₦1.7 million in total.
Vigilante officers caught Gafar and handed him over to the police.
On Tuesday, Magistrate Miss O.T. Odubanjo found him guilty after his guilty plea.
She sentenced him to two years in prison on the conspiracy and stealing counts, with no option of a fine.
