The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has told port security officers to follow strict rules when reporting sea or port safety problems, or face punishment.
The agency said sending reports through the wrong channels breaks international port security rules.
The warning came after reports from port facilities were being sent to individual NIMASA staff instead of the agency's International Ship and Port Facility Security Unit, known as the ISPS Unit.
In a notice signed by Mudi Isa, the head of the ISPS Code Unit, the agency told all PFSOs to send incident reports only to the approved ISPS Unit email address.
The office in charge of security hasn't been getting safety reports by email, and they warned that this could be dangerous.
It warned that reporting to the wrong place is a breach of ISPS compliance and told officers not to copy or send reports to personal staff emails unless they have clear permission.
Officers who do not get a reply from the unit within 24 hours should call it straight away.
Operators who are unsure about the correct reporting address were also told to check with the unit before sending anything.
NIMASA said the goal is to make sure security incidents are picked up quickly and handled through one coordinated system.
The agency added that maritime operators, terminal users and staff must use approved reporting steps as soon as they spot any security incident or unusual activity, to protect port safety and vessel safety.
