The police in Abia State have started investigating, after finding the dead body of a missing landlady inside soakaway at her tenant's compund in Umueleghele, Isiala Ngwa South.
Police Commissioner AIG Wilfred Afolabi confirmed the case on Friday while briefing journalists on the command's activities since September 11.
He said, "The matter is being investigated."
The woman had been missing for several days.
Residents first thought she had travelled.
When she did not return, the traditional ruler was informed, and the town crier and youths were called out to search farms, paths, bushes and unfinished buildings.
Her remains were later found in a soakaway pit about 30 feet deep, in a neighbouring compound.
Community sources say the woman had been in a land dispute with a man in the area, known locally as "New World."
They claim she had refused to sell part of her land to him and that he may be linked to her disappearance.
Sources also allege that acid was poured into the pit and that parts of her body were missing when it was searched.
These claims have not been confirmed.
Police have not yet named a suspect or said how she died.
Reports say a suspect has been handed over to the police for questioning.
