Tragic:Boat Mishap Claims Lives of Six Children, Eight Others Rescued

Six school children Wednesday, July 1, drowned in the Lagos Lagoon when a passenger boat conveying them from Ojo to Irewe Island capsized.

A boat mishap has claimed the lives of six school children on Wednesday, July 1, in the Lagos Lagoon after the passenger boat conveying them from the Ojo area of Lagos to Irewe Island capsized.
 
The school children who were yet to be identified were said to have been coming back from school and were crossing the Lagos Lagoon, when they met their unfortunate end.
 
While the bodies of six children were yet to be accounted for, it was learnt that already eight were rescued alive by local divers who were called in immediately the incident happened.
 
 
 
Due to the lateness of the hour, the emergency workers said the search has been suspended to be continued n the morning of today, Thursday, July 2.
 
Confirming this, the South-west Spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye. said eight were rescued alive. He said the boat had capsized after a speed boat overtook it, causing a wave splash that unturned the boat conveying the children.
 
He said, “NEMA has just been alerted of a boat mishap that involved 14 school children who were being conveyed across Ojo to Irewe jetty.
 
“While six of the children were yet to be recovered, eight were rescued alive. The search continue tomorrow to recover the bodies possibly.”
