Following claims by two Nigerian super stars and a London-based Ghanaian super star that the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards doesn't respect African acts, a top ranking official of the leading provider for black entertainment has rejected the claims, urging African singers to make their music "more internationally appealing" instead.
Fuse ODG,
Yemi Alade and
Wizkid, had in the wake of the 2015 BET Awards, took to their individual Twitter accounts to slam organizers of the awards for treating stars from Africa like second class citizens by presenting winner of the category from Africa their award backstage and several hours before the main event proper.
The comments by these trio generated reactions from Africans, who agreed with their viewpoints and lashed out at the BET Award organizers.
But in a series of tweets on Monday, the Director of Programming and Production at BET International, Lilian Blankson, advised against tweeting "lies and mistruths" because according to her, "There has never been a backstage presentation of any award". However, she confirmed that award presentations were pre-recorded and that this was not exclusive to only African acts.
