Over 300 wild reindeer were killed by a freak lightning bolt in southern Norway.

According to The Sun, the 323 reindeer, including 70 young, were found on Friday by a devastated gamekeeper in the Hardangervidda plateau national park.

The rolling hills are home to Europe’s largest herd of wild reindeer and roughly 10,000 of the animals live there. Shocking and touching images show the lifeless bodies of the wild reindeer lying close to each other after the tragic incident.

Kjartan Knutsen, from the Norwegian Environment Agency, said: “There were very strong storms in the area on Friday. “The animals stay close together in bad weather and these ones were hit by lightning.”

He added: “It’s unusual. We’ve never seen anything like this on this scale.”

The reindeer were killed in a thunderstorm which battered the Hardangervidda region on Friday.
