Benin Magistrates' Court Sentences Teenager to 6-years Imprison...His Offence is Controversial

An Oredo Magistrates' Court in Benin, Edo State has sentenced a 19-year old man to six-year imprisonment alongside an accomplice.

 
A 19-year old man identified as Happy Okotie, who accussed of stealing, was today, Spetember 19, sentenced to six-years imprisonment by an Oredo Magistrates’ Court sitting in Benin, the Edo State capital, 
 
‎‎According to a report by Punch Metro, the suspect was jailed alongside a 25-year-old man, Kingsley Ebose, for six years each without an option of fine.
 
The court magistrate, Mrs. RacheaI Ogbevoen, convicted the suspects after finding them guilty of a two-count charge of breaking in, entry and stealing proffered against them.‎
 
The offence was said to have been committed on August 25, 2016, in New Benin, Oredo Local Government Area.
 
The Police Prosecutor, Patrick Agbonifo, had told the court that the convicts had conspired to commit felony on the said date, adding that the convicts broke into a store belonging to one Mrs. Tessy Okpebiye at night, where they stole some valuable items.
 
He listed the stolen items to include one Nokia battery, two Samsung Galaxy phones, one laptop and a cash sum of N17,000,adding that the stolen items were worth  N235,000.
 
According to him, the offence contravened Sections 516 and 411 of the Criminal Code, Cap 48 Vol. II, Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976, as applicable in Edo State.
