A woman from Harare committed suicide after a United Methodist Church (UMC) pastor denied responsibility for her pregnancy, New Zimbabwe reports.

According to the Manicaland province police spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa, the incident took place on Wednesday morning in Muzokomba area of Kenya.

The dead woman identified as Succeed Muzonde, 23, of Vito Street National, Mbare drank poison after her boyfriend, Tailor Matare, 24, who is a pastor rejected responsibility of her pregnancy.

It was gathered that the woman had traveled from Harare to Muzokomba on Tuesday to inform her lover about the pregnancy. After telling him, Matare denied being responsible and an argument ensued between the pair.

The following day, Muzonde went to Muzokomba shopping centre and bought an unknown pesticide. On her way back home, she sent pastor Matare a text message telling him she had drunk poison.

Matare and one Sithole Jobe of Muzokomba district office then rushed the woman to Muzokomba Clinic.

She was later transferred to Birchenough Bridge District Hospital where she died on admission.

“As police, we urge people to seek professional counseling rather than resorting to taking own life,” said Inspector Kakohwa.
