A Magistrates Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State, on Monday, sentenced two men and a woman to prison for stealing live chickens from a poultry farm.

Justice Helen Danboyi, of the Jos Magistrates’ Court, on Monday, sentenced two men and a woman to six months imprisonment each for stealing 11 live chickens from a poultry farm after they pleaded guilty and begged for mercy. 
 
The convicts, all residents of Ungwan Jarawa Utan Jos, were arraigned on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, theft and receipt of stolen property. 
 
According to a report by Vanguard, the judge said the sentence was meant to serve as deterrence to others who might want to engage in a similar act, and gave each of the convict option to pay N20,000, fine and N18,000 as compensation to the complainant. 
 
Corporal Karimu Bashiru, who is the prosecutor, had told the court that Samson Musa and Emmanuel Iliya stole 11 chickens from Rita Okereke’s farm and sold same to Comfort Ado, adding that the offences contravened Sections 97, 348, 287 and 317 of Penal Code.
