Following widespread report that the Rivers State Government has concluded plans to use drones to monitor the rerun election, the information commissioner has thrown more light on the matter.

Governor Nyesome Wike

An earlier report which stated that the Rivers State government planned to use drones for the rerun election has been described as untrue.

It would be recalled that a report quoting Lere Olayinka, SA Public Communications & New Media of Ekiti State had said Nyesom Wike had planned to use 300 drones for the election in the state to forestall any illegality in the state.

However, while speaking on Saturday in Okrika, the Rivers Commissioner for Information, Dr Austin Tam-George, described the report as untrue. He said state government never planned to deploy drones to monitor the rerun elections in the state.

According to NAN, he said the Nyesom Wike-led government was deeply interested in ensuring free, peaceful and credible legislative rerun elections.
“That is a lie, we never contemplate using drones to monitor the elections, we are interested in following, casting our votes and ensuring they count,’’ he said.

He said that the Peoples Democratic Party had directed its members to be peaceful but vigilant.

“We are opposed to violence and electoral criminality, we will only use peace and legitimate means to ensure that nothing illegal happens,’’ he said.
