Governor Nyesom Wike Blasts DSS Over Raid and Arrest of Saraki's Aide

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has lambasted the Department of State Security Service for raiding the office of the aide of Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Following the raid by the Department of State Security Service at the private office of Senate President Saraki's aide, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere who is also the National President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, the Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, last night blasted the agency for raising false and baseless alarm.

The DSS had accused the Governor in a statement released on Friday of using Ugochinyere to disrupt activities in the state capital Abuja.

The DSS had accused Ugochinyere and his group of planning to stage a protest at the state capital and said they were sponsored by Governor Nyesom Wike.

However, the DSS has been accused of being partisan and denying Nigerians their fundamental right to protest. Just three days ago, some All Progressives Congress protesters stormed Abuja protesting the rerun election. The protesters visited the office of the Inspector General of police and handed him letter accusing Wike of being the mastermind of the violence in the state.

Reacting to the recent accusation through his commissioner for Information and Communications Austin Tam-George, the Governor Wike said: “It is an irresponsible scaremongering by an agency that seems bent on a mission to blackmail the governor of Rivers State and bring the state government into disrepute. Governor Wike is a man of peace and would never orchestrate disturbances in any part of the country.

“A few days ago, the Minister for Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) sponsored street protests against Governor Wike in Abuja, without any alarm by the DSS. Why is the DSS ringing its hypocritical alarm bells against Governor Wike, only now?

“Why has the DSS not yet provided evidence of the so-called billions of cash they alleged was taken away by Governor Wike from the home of the high court judge the agency invaded in Port Harcourt some months ago? In its blind partisanship, the DSS has lost every credibility.

“The Rivers State Government challenges the DSS to leave governor Wike alone and instead focus its operational attention on the Boko Haram insurgency that has killed over 70,000 people and displaced six million Nigerians in the past six years.”
